I’m really good @ coming up with catchy titles that have no actual bearing on my subject matter in any truly constructive way? In other words people aren’t going to be looking for memories on the search engines to come up with a video of a bichon and a lab playing but….that’s the way I roll.

BTW, I don’t normally say or even think that’s the way I roll, it just came out. Maybe I’m ill? This is sort of a tribute to Mugsey, I was looking for pictures of Dispatch and came across these. Sorry they are long.. enjoy.

Oh and I know I’m not supposed to let the bichon latch onto my arm growling but it’s soooo much fun and I doubt he turns into killer dog but you never know. Plus he has been fixed and he has to get his jollies where he can ……don’t cha think? My brother says the bichon thinks he’s like dominating me and preparing to hump when he grabs me like that…I think bro is just trying to gross me out?

What did you THINK this was about considering this is a pg 13 rated blog?

My first choice of title had doggie style in it.

Do we have to perform trepanation (drilling a hole in skull) to wash your mind out with soap?

Just kidding (except about the title, I thought that was catchy?).

This will take some explanation, when Dispatch (bichon fries)was a puppy I lost him in our crew cab pickup, literally couldn’t find him but could hear him. That is what my husband says created Dispatches obsession with being close to me. Or rather I created Dispatches obsession with being close because I didn’t want to lose him again.

Since we’ve been in the big truck Dispatch has been pretty good about riding but if the jake brake comes on too much or we hit rumble strips he gets nervous or sometimes just needs mommy. But he needs mommy to hold him a certain way (thus assume the position) his front needs to be supported by my left arm while he is sort of pressing against my chest. If he’s tired he can drape and doze like this but if it’s a matter of being comforted he needs to be fully supported and muzzle might go on shoulder too. If he gets on my lap and my arm is not convenient for him to drape himself over or be supported by he will scratch @ it or nuzzle it, then he looks @ me and scratches and nuzzles some more like you old hag, have you forgotten what your purpose in life is? The right arm doesn’t work and no one else can do this for Dispatch. Mommy sometimes gets tired of this, everyone else who sees this says Dispatch is the most spoiled dog in the world as he can’t even support his own body but he just wants to cuddle and sit like a person.

Dispatch and the black hole

I have no picture of me holding Dis in the position but I do have one of Dispatches new obsession. Staring in the black hole. It’s in the dash of the truck, actually it’s a drawer on the floor with an opening above it. At first I thought he was like wanting a tv there and then we realized that most of the noises he hears from truck are up there in the engine so he might catch sight of those monsters that are making those growls if he waits long enough and stares @ this black hole that looks like it leads to the noises. The other explanation is he is showing his extreme boredom and making me doubt his sanity by sitting and staring @ a black hole for hours on end (Daddy votes for this one and says he is saying pick me up, I’m abused so I will stare @ my black hole if you won’t pick me up and hold me like a baby)? Either one is equally likely.

We are all fine, I will TRY to blog more.

Dispatch has buffaloed every dog around here although some are Great Pyrenees as I said before. He also basically ignored a bad tempered Lab, like walked past him like he wasn’t even there. In other words the bichon is 10 ft tall and bulletproof and he doesn’t even need to drink (or have gonads evidently) to be that way. We were talking about his technique of running toward the big dogs and if they don’t run he jumps @ them. (someone said he must be part Doberman because he’s so fearless, it was a joke) Evidently this is extreme craziness in the dog world too considering he is a 17 lb. puffball so the big dogs say I’m having NO part of this and RUN. This is all well and good (although I TRY to make him be nice he “patrols” the area and goes after any invaders) till a dog comes along he can’t buffalo and if I don’t catch him or he doesn’t develop an IQ that’s all she wrote for Dispatch.

This dog is owned by the people who own the rv park. They have other great pyrenees who are heavier. This dog is never fat (and she is probably part shepherd), they said they’ve taken her to the vet and there is nothing wrong. She eats and eats though and we all feed her. Friday night we had pork chops and left over mashed potatoes and chicken n noodles, real diet food. I didn’t want any leftovers so I was feeding the chicken n noodles to this dog. I bet you see where this is going. She was eating UNDER our outdoor table, it’s not like we hadn’t told Dispatch to leave her alone, we were all sitting around, so he sneaks over there and decides she has been there long enough and launches his little self @ her. He bit her first, and she did bite him, no one was injured but he had to back down. I am SO glad it happened because maybe now he will @ least think twice before trying to go after anything 5 times his size? He’d already chased off the boy dog (not far, he sort of sauntered away) who probably weighs well over 100 lb. Dispatch was a different little dog after she got after him, I put him inside till she left and then he was happy just to sit in mamas lap. I know I’ve broken all sorts of dog rules, I should be able to get him to stop and I can if I scream loud enough and soon enough. I should keep him on a leash if he goes after other dogs. But the 4 lb Yorkie called Buddy down the road a bit? He goes after Dispatch and Dis thinks this is great, the funniest thing in the world, I don’t think he would bite Buddy if he was chocolate flavored. Also Charlie the Yorkie Poo? Dispatch and he have had some pretty serious words, Charlie just doesn’t give up and neither does Dispatch. It’s just the big dogs he’s mean to. See I told you, no IQ!

Doesn’t she look like a killer?

Ohhh, poor Dispatch, he’s probably close to my age in doggie years and he is now an older dog. Over 6 years old. OK he’s not a pup anymore. This link is one of the best I’ve found for explaining what to do and not to do when crate training a dog and it’s actually worked. Well it’s worked as well as I could hope for. He still isn’t quiet in a crate in the car but he isn’t quiet if he’s out of the crate so what do I expect? I hadn’t even heard of crate training when I got him and when I did try when he was a year or so old there was no way he was putting up with it so I gave up.

Bichon in a crate with his bunny

What caused me to think I should write this post? I’ve had a little success with teaching an old dog a new trick, I no longer have a dog crying in his crate. The other day I put him in the crate because I noticed he was “denned” under the chairs and table and figured he could den in his crate. I was playing on the internet(surprised? dripping with sarcasm), he did his whine that humans can’t hear hardly but I told him to be quiet. I was going in the other room which granted isn’t far because this is an RV but it’s a BIG RV and I closed a door, came back down here, went up to do laundry and then realized the dog hadn’t been moving around with me? Then I realized he was in his crate and had been there for like an hour! As far as I’m concerned that is success, I could go in the other room and move freely around and he didn’t get concerned or @ least didn’t make noise. So I tried going outside, he watched me but didn’t throw a fit. He whined a little later on and I told him to be quiet and then when he was I let him out. If you had seen the banshee monster with all four legs splayed out and stiff being forced into the crate door before and then heard him call his wolf ancestors to rescue him you would understand what a victory this is!

I'm sitting and the door is closed

I’ve been crate training Dispatch since early this summer. It hasn’t been easy and if you know me it hasn’t been every day, just when I think of it. The first few days I was pretty consistent though. The treat I used was a kong filled with mozzarella cheese, he was used to getting this every day when I went to work (can you say guilt trip?), this is probably why he lost a tooth, too much human food and not enough brushing. Actually for probably 3 months if Dispatch got a treat I tried to make sure he was in the crate when he got it. Of course if we bar-b-qued outside that was out of the question but most of the time he got his treats in the crate. Any treat, bones, pieces of meat, if it wasn’ t dog food he got it IN the crate. I basically did what the link above said to do.

Might as well relax till crazy woman lets me out

Put a treat in the crate and show the dog the treat. I pushed him in the first time but after he figured out I wasn’t slamming the door he was fine with going in. He wanted to leave with the treat but I made him stay in there till he finished it. I would leave the crate door open and sometimes he would wander in looking for another one.

Probably after a few days I moved on to shutting the door. The first few times he wasn’t happy but that passed after about 5 seconds. You don’t know how he feels about Mozzarella cheese.

We tried increasing the time he was in the crate. This was going really well and I could leave him in there for like an hour. This was in the same room as I was in though.

We moved the crate to another room. This didn’t go over so well but after a week I could leave him in there and he knew he had to be quiet eventually to get out. I could also go outside so I didn’t have to listen to the bowels of Hades screaming coming from the crate. Not really but he can be SO pitiful.

I kept up with the crate training but had slacked off for the past month. I noticed how Dispatch was crawling under the table and chairs which are jammed up against the wall (partly because daddy can’t take the tennis ball away under there or Dis thinks he can’t). My laptop is here so it’s like he’s under my desk in his den which is where he wanted to stay @ home. So I put his crate over here by me.

I started again with the intermittent crate training. ALWAYS if he got cheese it was in the crate. I’ve let him have his bones outside because he needs to chew on them more because of his tartar on his teeth (Dispatch discovered there was more to life than meat and cheese and ice cream). Then the breakthrough came when I went in the other room and he was quiet.

This Bichon is Stubborn and spoiled. Read here and here if you don’t believe me. So if I can get him to stay in a crate with any amount of success makes me think it’s possible for all dogs. My daughter has a yorkiepoo Charlie and he doesn’t like crates either but I think with time and patience maybe he will come around. Of course he is Charlie too. My daughter dog and house sits for a living now so having the dog in a crate would be advantageous. She has someone to leave him with now if he would disrupt the household she is going into but it would be nice if she could take him anywhere with her. Here are links to two other crate training pages, one from all about dogs, and here is what the humane society has to say about crate training.

My reasons for wanting my bichon frise crate trained? He is easier to control. I have hopes of people coming and I can put him in his crate if he gets too rowdy (someone came to the door and I put him in the crate tonight!). He will also be easier to travel with and safer if he is in a crate. He isn’t destructive @ all when we leave him alone and never has been so that’s not a problem. He even throws up by the door if I’m not home because he knows he’s not supposed to do that in the house. I’m not kidding. I won’t use the crate hardly @ all if I’m gone but if I needed to leave a window open or something and couldn’t confine him in the house I do have a place to put him. Also I have been in situations when I was working outside and had him but he wasn’t happy or safe on a leash.

Another flat Bichon photo

Oh the last picture? Has nothing to do with crate training. It’s Dispatch @ 5:15 in the morning saying I am one with the blanket, do not disturb.

UPDATE: The dog evidently has no problems with separation anxiety anymore and he uses the crate as a place of sanctuary. The only time Iput his collar on him is when we go somewhere. So I put on his collar when I got ready to go for a walk, we’ve been doing these walks about a week now, LONG walks. Then I got out the leash, walked to the door and called him. No dog. So I called again, no dog. I shut the door and then opened it, he’s usually there waiting. No dog. He was hiding in his crate. Evidently the mile walks are not to the bichons taste?? Too bad so sad he went anyway.

SECOND UPDATE: I take two walks. He was more willing to go outside on the second one. Then he stayed by the door. He planted his feet and was NOT going on another walk (the last time we walked was Thursday and it was really hot but I made sure he cooled off and had plenty of water). I didn’t let him get away with it I made him walk behind me on the leash for a bit. I took the stroller though and let him ride. He was perfectly happy. I feel like a rickshaw driver for a dog now!

October is national adopt a dog month (humane society)or barring that adopt a shelter month (ASPCA). See my link for petfinder, click on my link for petfinder, or just type in petfinder in your address bar or in google or go to your animal shelter. You can donate even if you aren’t able to take a pet @ this time! Take it from me, they have lots of my size 12 clothes, (from when I was fatter) and lots of my size 3’s and 5’s maybe I gave up the 1’s too, those were the good old days. But nevermind, DONATE or give of your time if you can’t adopt a pet right now. Please? Dog adoption and Dog rescue are near and dear to my heart you know. I’d take 5 if I had the room right now.

I am so going to order one of these collars for Dispatch when I have the money, light tan and brass with an engraved nameplate. Eliminates the need for dog tags bouncing off of someones collar and you know how that bothers him. He can’t drink out of his water bowl with his collar on with it’s tags, it’s metal, the dog tags hit the metal and scare him. Give him a break he’s a little white fluffy dog with no functioning man parts, he can be a wuss. He’s not spoiled, NO.

This story is a bit old but I love little Rio, he is a Maltese/Bichon mix who alerted his person Janet Lopez to a heart attack. What I find interesting is that Rio taught himself to or just recognized when she needed to rest from her Rheumatoid Arthritis. Rio hadn’t been trained to detect signs of a heart attack either!

Dispatch the Bichon Relaxing

Above is my Bichon Dispatch. I had blood clots earlier this summer. He didn’t notice them that I know of BUT when the doctor told me not to move around because I hadn’t had an ultrasound to actually diagnose how bad they were Dispatch ended his long standing feud with my older daughter. He was like “here you take care of her now I’m tired,” when my daughter came over. He doesn’t dislike my daughter, he just acts terrified of her, I think because she has been known to raise her voice to the grandkids and they run? But that day and ONLY that day Dispatch was like I’ve had enough playing Nurse Nancy I’m SO glad you are here, I’ll even sit in your lap. Then it was over when I found out I could walk, the blood clots were the kind that isn’t so serious. He did spend most of the time with me in bed when I had lyme too but that isn’t unusual for him to be in bed if I’m in bed. 23 hours a day was unusual but he was there for most of it.

I’ve found an Etsy shop that caught my eye and it’s called Pop Dog Press. If you want something to give a dog lover that is small and original here’s the place to go. She also has a blog @ Pop Dog Press on Blogspot

Since I’m not too sure how this blog would take to me reposting photos here’s a link to Leonardo and his dog. Doesn’t that sort of look like Johnny Depp over Leonardo’s right shoulder though?

For fun go here, it’s a Kanye West spoof, I thought it was cute, I’m simple sometimes that way though.

Now to complete this mishmash here is a list of the supposed best ten dog parks in America. I see the one in Ft. Lauderdale is on there, Dispatch didn’t go there, he got to run free @ Mill Pond Park because there had been that thing called Wilma through there and what was a little dog poop when they had piles of debris there? We also went to the dog beach @ Key West, he liked that.

Tomorrow pictures of our adventures and more of Super Dog in Stroller. Also I bought a copy of the dog whisperers new book, don’t tell husband. I figured I could take it out of my vast profits I make from my adsense. I can buy another book and 1/2 with my money so far whoo hoo!

Man versus dog danceoff thanks to makemnynow. Not exactly an animal story but VERY cute anyway.

Hilarious Cat Pictures thanks to carolz_place and Rhotoalbum. Some old some I don’t think I’d seen?

A story about a ten year old boys dog who was shot by police. Sort of like the professor in Chicago this incident seems to be a case of everyone jumping when they should have thought instead of just reacting including the dog. Also you should control your dog @ all times. I know I fail @ this though.

Here is another article on the dog flu.

This isn’t a pleasant subject but a quarter of a million people protested the eating of dog meat in South Korea. The first picture is enough to throw me off meat today. I admit I didn’t read all of this article.

Police are investigating a rash of cat poisonings in Wakeman OH, I know some people don’t like cats but has there been an increase in cat abuse?

A woman in Daytona Beach FL was threatened by her caretaker, he threatened to behead her cat also. Sicko. Sicko for threatening the cat and being mean to the woman.

In happier news a dog who crossed the border from Russia to Finland has been adopted by someone in Russia, Finnish law prohibited the dog from staying in Finland without a 6 month quarantine in Russia and the dog was only given a short window of time before being euthanized.

And I read in another blog about a story in the Des Moines Register that said people in Des Moines had been bitten 182 times in 2006 by dogs. FIVE breeds are responsible for ALL of those bites and Labs???? Labrador Retrievers, the slobber lemme hide dogs, are responsible for most of the bites with pit bulls second. The link to the blog is here. Personally I’ve been bitten by a Pekingese and an Airdale? In both cases I was stupid but the Airdale shouldn’t have done it, I had food in my hand and was NOT offering it to her. I think I’m most afraid of Dobermans, German Shepherds are listed in the vicious dogs, the one I had wouldn’t hurt a fly, the one my step-son has I think is mixed with Doberman and I don’t trust her completely. My grandparents had a dog that was probably technically a pit bull. His name was Spot, his biggest fault was he looked on me as an object for hunching (I was preschool age) and that was my sole purpose in life. Spot never bit anyone or really offered to to my knowledge and my grandparents had the normal amount of visitors for a rural atmosphere in the 1960s. Lots of people. NO Bites.

AND I found a book that looks to be very interesting Don’t Dump The Dog by Randy Gibb. Melinda Roth profiled Mr Gibb and is the co-author of From Baghdad, With Love which I have read and can recommend. Don’t Dump the Dog looks to be a hilarious read about bad dog cases.

This is Charlie, he is my daughters yorkiepoo or yorkie-poo. She said Dispatch my Bichon Frise was spoiled (nevermind the free world says Dis is spoiled), lemme tell you Charlie is SPOILED. OK, he doesn’t have a stroller yet like Dispatch does, but take my word for it Charlie is spoiled. Of course we wouldn’t have it any other way and he is cute and loves grandmommie but…. I found out he might have actually cost money and started calling him Refund, my husband met Charlie a week or so ago and called him Rebate which is close enough.

In other dog news a Yorkshire Terrier caught a burglar in the act, he didn’t stop the burglar being as how he is a Yorkie but he slowed him down a bit and let the family know there was something entirely not right in the house.

In Houston a woman ate the pet goldfish she and her common law husband had purchased, the couple evidently were not getting along too well. She fried the goldfish first and had eaten 3 by the time police got there.

I know I’m on a roll with this newspaper but…..in Southampton New York a man may face charges for letting cats go that were in traps set by an animal trapper to catch his neighbors raccoons. It’s not hard to do to let a cat go from a live trap but if it’s a feral cat it can be rather exciting. I wouldn’t know of course being a TOTALLY law abiding citizen.

I had my makeup on to go to town but it just came off, the water fountain is on again. I’m CRYING people and you might be too after you read this story about Ella a Rottweiler who was in a car crash with her family. Ella wasn’t noticed by the rescue workers @ the crash and she spent 13 days gathering her families items up and bedding down with them while scavenging for food, waiting and waiting for her family to come back. That just breaks my heart that some dog is laying somewhere abandoned and wondering where its people went.

In a People Magazine news story about the Gosselin’s (you know who they are don’t pretend you don’t) they (Jon) took the family German Shepherds to their trainer for an indefinite stay. Jon says it’s Kate’s fault and I just bet Kate says it’s Jon’s fault, surprise surprise?

Remember that horrible horrible picture of the cat someone had almost entirely covered with duct tape? There is a happy ending, Sticky found a new family. I was telling my husband about this the other night and I remember how horrified I was someone would do this to a cat, take the time to actually unroll the tape around the poor thing. Then I remembered WHY I was so horrified. A year or so ago my neighbors cat had an injured tail, the vet had shaved where he put adhesive tape but the tape had somehow gotten on the base of the cats fur covered tail. We are talking that super sticky white tape on a kitten that did NOT like pain and fur was long. So my neighbor called me because there was an ice storm (couldn’t get to the vet) and the cats tail looked like it needed the tape off and new dressing put on. I did it but it wasn’t easy or pleasant and we used tape that was easier to get off the next time. They sedated Sticky to get the tape off but I imagine it was still a time consuming procedure and Sticky was probably minus some hair when they got through.

And I don’t want to get into the whole pit bull thing, I’ve seen some that were the nicest dogs and meek and mild but I still don’t want one. But here a man in Saskatoon bit a pit bull on the nose when it was attacking his neighbors dog. Not only did the dog quit the attack it became submissive to the man and licked his face. For the record, bichons don’t buy this, Dispatch gets really mad and just plain PO ed if I bite him. Not hard, he doesn’t like it if I growl either but I can do that alpha dog stare and win every time. Whoo Hoo I am alpha over a 17 lb fluffball, my life if complete.

And just for fun here is a link to the 10 smartest dogs. Supposedly it’s correct, it’s erroneous of course because the bichon is not on there and I dearly loved Mugsey but he was a golden retriever/lab mix and they are both on there. Poor Mugsey would run from a napkin being waved @ him because he thought we would throw it on him like a blanket, you’d just have to have been there to understand. You throw a blanket (a lightweight unfolded blanket) on a dog to see how smart they are by how long it takes them to get out from under the blanket. I admit Dispatch spent his life fighting his enemy fabric (think about it, he digs on carpet not in the dirt and pulls on towels) so he gets out of the blanket very fast, we have to hold it down to give him a handicap. Mugsey used to sometimes give up when we would throw the blanket on him and just lay there because he was tired of trying and no we wouldn’t hold it down on him, life was a handicap to him. He was afraid of the floor lamp moving too and my husband sneezing, the vacuum…..

The CDC ( Center for Disease Control) has a page for canine flu or dog flu. It’s the H3N8 and is more common than it used to be but is NOT transmitted to humans, there does seem to be a vaccine which costs $60 and is delivered in two shots from what I could gather. The flu symptoms in dogs seem to be about the same as humans. If your dog is tired, coughing, sneezing, has a runny nose, or you can tell he has a fever you might consider taking him to the vet. The mortality rate for dog flu is about 8% which is high but not horrible. Inside dogs who are walked on leashes are more inclined to get it, I presume because they tend to come in contact with other dogs and virus thrive in a warmer environment.

You ask, ye of little faith, HOW could these two things be related? They are because they both involve poop, this is a family blog ya know? Sort of.

First I haven’t been feeling well, haven’t done anything but mess with my blogs for days and not much of that, yesterday afternoon I decided I really possibly was sick with flu or something, today I’m better so? I dunno. But because I’ve been sick. I hate to admit it but my tiny tiny bit of exercise I took with Dispatch the Bichon Frise everyday has fallen by the wayside. So I didn’t take Dispatch regularly to the open field where he can poop and eat grass and bark @ things freely very often. When Dis does poop in the yard I throw it over the fence to the woods with large leaves. You say GROSS? Gimme a break we aren’t supposed to put TP in our RV holding tank and the other option is picking it up in a wal mart bag or two which is NOT going in my house trash so the leaves it is. BIG leaves and he is a little tiny dog. Get the picture. Well today I’m sort of wanderinbg around outside with Dis in my sick daze (you should have seen me drive to grocery store. I bet THAT was interesting, Somehow I almost managed to take off my side mirror with the cart but that’s another story) So I’m outside and Dispatch ducks under the fence in the back of our RV. It’s barbed wire and there are woods on the other side and then a pasture with lonhorns, I could just see me scaling the barbed wire fence and chasing Mr. Fluffy through South Texas swamps and bayous which are like next door and yes we have a baby alligator close. BUT does Dispatch run away after he ducks under the fence (remember this is where I throw his poop because it’s woods, don’t get grossed out there are raccoons pooping there so why not my dog? ) NO Dispatch the wonder dog POOPS in the woods. I kid you not. Of course there may have been whatever mysterious scent there that tells him hey this is the PLACE you must poop today, none other will do, or he was trying to cover up another animals scent (@ least he wasn’t pooping in another dogs food which he has been known to do.) BUT to me it looked like he’s saying poor Mama she isn’t herself, I’ll just put the poop where she wants it Or he was saying lazy broad, I’d better put my scent over here or she will accidentally smear it somewhere as loony as she is acting today. I’d like to think the former was true but we will never know.

Second poop story:

I like House the medical drama and I like Hugh Laurie. Hugh Laurie was on Jay Leno last night and told a story about how to survive a lion attack which stuck in my head. My brother and my husband say House is a male chauvinistic butthole only they say something else, I say I’m totally used to how House acts so what does that say about them? hmmmm? Anyway Hugh did a film once with a lion, he said the lion trainer gave him one important piece of advice on how to survive a lion charge. When the lion charges reach behind you and throw poop in his face. You ask where you get the poop? The lion trainer said if a lion is charging you there will be poop behind you. I thought this was pretty sage advice?

Maybe I have a fever so all I could think to write about is poop?

Did you ever consider adopting a dog rather than buying from a dog breeder? These dogs or puppies can have more behavioral and health problems than puppies from a good dog breeder but you can also get a dog or a puppy that is easy to train and a joy to your life from a shelter. Nothing is guaranteed with any dog or puppy you bring into your home whether they are freebies, purchased, or adopted.

Petfinder is a GREAT site to look for puppies or dogs to adopt.

Mona, is a year old Bichon Frise Poodle located in Illinois for adoption. Click on her name for details.

a Puppy Poodle Bichon Frise Mix

Jessica Simpsons Malti Poo (Maltese and Poodle Mix) was stolen by a coyote late Tuesday night evidently.

Daisy is so cute it’s heartbreaking. Most sources think the dog is a goner which is horrible but it reminds me that there are coyotes everywhere and they love little dogs. Especially little white dogs that wander around lawns alone.
